The coating has good shear stress resistant and can be used for low angle solid particle erosion and sliding wear applications.
The zirconia-based coatings can be applied as hard bearing surface coatings on cylinder liners, thermal barrier coatings for automotive and diesel piston, rings and crowns, exhaust valves and turbine blades. Zirconia-base TBCs are widely used on the surfaces of high-temperature engine components. The coating allows higher operating temperatures and have less cooling air requirements. Its higher thermodynamic efficiency is important to prolong substrate lifetimes of engines due to lower temperatures at the metal surface.
