Goji has been celebrated and sought after for centuries for its precious health promoting qualities. This amazing berry has been referred to as the Super Fruit of the century.
Although the Goji berry has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years, modern science is now confirming what traditional doctors have experienced through trial and error. As a result of this, the use of Goji liquids and Goji powders in functional foods and beverages has grown astronomically in recent years.
The tremendous health-giving properties of Goji are numerous. Goji is well known for its anti-aging properties. The powerful antioxidants defend against premature aging by helping to combat free-radical damage throughout the body.
They also contain a wealth of other compounds, including zinc, calcium, amino acids, selenium, and phosphorus. They also contain B vitamins, iron, protein, and vitamins C and E. Goji berries are believed to be the best source of carotenoids available - not surprising, considering how brightly colored these little berries are!
The nutrients in Goji berries may help protect liver cells, enhance memory, and support the immune system. Goji is also used to support the normal health and functions of the kidneys and the heart, as well as help the body combat fatigue, improve the quality of sleep, and maintain healthy eyesight. It may also be helpful in supporting healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, and maintaining a healthy body weight.
Goji stimulates the pituitary gland, thus helping to reduce body fat, improve memory and sleep patterns. It has also been used as a natural treatment for insomnia.
Goji is also one of the few plant species on earth that contains the mineral germanium, which may be helpful in fighting cancer.
Goji's master molecule polysaccharides showed to regulate the body’s immune system by controlling many important defense functions. It can also help blood sugar levels, decrease blood pressure significantly and help reduce body weight by enhancing the conversion of food into energy instead of fat. Goji further contains beta-sitosterol, which helps reduce cholesterol.
Goji contains cyperone which is a good heart strengthener. Research has indicated that Goji can protect against some of the unpleasant side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
And the list goes on!
Goji berry, also known as Wolfberry, is grown in China, Mongolia, and the Himalayas. The Goji plant is a perennial shrub or vine belonging to the nightshade family, related to potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants. The Goji's pretty purple flowers give way to delicate red-orange berries, which are gathered and dried for consumption or distribution.
The Goji plant grows best at elevations of a few thousand feet and there are attempts to grow Goji in Western countries. The main harvest season is in early summer with another smaller crop coming at the end of summer.
