Radial shaft seals are used for retain the lubricant in the system and prevents fluids from leaking into or out of the system. It also prevents contaminants such as water, chemicals, dust etc. from getting in. This helps in proper functioning of the system and also extends the service life of the system.

The Radial shaft seal is mainly comprised of rubber, metal case and a garter spring. This combination of materials along with a robust design makes a strong seal. The radial force of the main rubber lip keeps it in contact with the shaft, forming a layer of oil film between the oil side and air side of the shaft, while still maintaining a tight seal to keep the environments separated and prevent leakages.

Radial shaft seals are critical for proper functioning of a mechanism. Without the radial shaft seal, the system would be devoid of lubricant which will result in metal to metal contact under high friction and increase the wear rate of the components which in turn would lead to premature failure of the system.
