＜Wear-resistant Coating for Piston Ring＞
The higher emission standards in recent years have forced major changes in the design of power cylinder components like internal combustion engines rings. Lubricating oil consumed during engine operation contributes to one third of the particulates emitted. Hence, it becomes crucial to cut down oil exposure to combustion gases by raising the compression ring closer to the top of the piston. However, moving up the compression piston ring will force the ring to work under unfavorable conditions of higher combustion forces, increasing temperatures and thinner lubricating films. Because of which, the coating on the piston ring is disturbed. Therefore, a durable coating is desired in these tough environmental conditions.
The majority of top compression rings produced today are plated with chromium. Chromium plating has proven to have poor abilities in wear and scuff resistance under high ring temperature and boundary lubrication conditions. Thermally sprayed molybdenum coatings; therefore, have been used as a substitute for more than two decades.
However, either chromium plating or molybdenum spray coatings are limited factorsin engine durability. When ring face coating wears, it causes blow-by of combustion gases and liner wear gradually increases ring gap areas. Thus, for sealing purpose, stable, compatible wear-resistant ring face coatings and liner materials allowing for lower wear and component longevity are in high market demands.
