＜Thermal Barrier Coatings(TBCs)＞
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely used to improve the durability of hot section components in gas turbine engines . Structure of typical TBC coating consists of a ceramic topcoat for thermal insulation, a thermally grown oxide scale, predominantly Al2O3, a metallic bond coat providing oxidation and hot corrosion resistance and a superalloy substrate, which is the load-bearing component. Since zirconia has low thermal conductivity and high thermal expansion coefficient, the zirconia partially stabilized with yttria (YSZ) is usually used as ceramic topcoat of TBCs.
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are usually applied to metallic surfaces, such as on gas turbine or aero-engine parts that operate at elevated temperatures. These coatings serve to insulate components from large and prolonged heat loads by utilizing thermally insulating materials which can sustain an appreciable temperature difference between the substrate and the coating surface. Therefore, these coatings can bear higher operating temperatures while limiting the thermal exposure of structural components. That will prolong operation life time of the components by reducing oxidation and thermal fatigue. In some turbine applications, TBCs permit working fluid temperatures higher than the melting point of the metal airfoil when conjunct with active film cooling.     Due to increasing demand for higher efficiency and durability, engines have to operate at higher temperature for longer operating time. Moreover, for rotating/moving components, thinner coatings can reduce the weight. It's a motivation to keep progressing on develop a new and advanced TBCs.
